I'm providing the following information on our pioneering ancestors who lived a significant part of their life in and around the Mt Garnet area. We (their descendants) are travelling to Nth. Qld. next month to retrace their footsteps. There are 11 of us in total and will be in Mt Garnet on Monday 20th of July arriving about 11.00 am and staying for a few hours before moving on to Gordonvale. The two names we want info on are LANGTRY (sometimes spelt LANGTREE) and WHEREAT. Below is what we already know. John ( Jack ) LANGTRY - His wife’s name was Catherine ( Kate ) - They were our great grand parents and were both Irish - They moved from the Cooktown area where they previously lived to Mt Garnet area about 1895 bringing 6 children with them – they latter had 4 more including twins Vince and Tom who were born in Montalbion on 17/10/1898 and at that time the older kids were going to the Montalbion school . Jack re-opened Murphy’s hotel at montalbion briefly during a slight mining revival in 1899. he also had a large bullock team on the Pt Douglas Rd but had seen it wiped out by a terrible tick plague . - Jack also lived and worked in Mt Garnet - we know he worked in the tin mines but we don’t know which ones - he also had a bullock or horse team there as well. Their kids went to school there and we would like to find more about where the school is / was and if there are any school records with their names in it, also photos etc. - Old rates or post office records may tell us where they lived. – The Langtry kids names were Margaret Lilian ( Lil ) ; Anne ; Mary Josephine ( Phene ) ; Richard ( Dick ) ; George ; John ( Jack ) ; Kathleen ( Kit ) ; Thomas Hugh ( Tom ) ; Vince ; Charlotte - Most of these should turn up in school records if they are still available . Margret Lillian ( Lil ) the first born, was our grandmother. Edward Percival ( Percy ) WHEREAT . - Percy was our Grand Father who married our Grand Mother Margret Lillian ( Lilly ) Langtry on the3rd August 1902 at Mt Garnet in the residence of Lilly’s father Jack Langtry and at the time of their marriage he was working as a shop assistant for Jack & Newells store, General Merchants at Mt Garnet. - About 1906 Percy acquired for himself a general store at Ord Siding, a few kms from Mt Garnet, about 5 kms further on was the Gilmore Underground mine. - Our mother Iris Kathleen Whereat and her twin sister Elizabeth Myrtle ( Myrtle ) were born in Mt Garnet 31st Jan. 1910. – Other brothers and sisters we think may have been born in Mt Garnet are (1) Isabell ( Bell ) Elenor DOB aprox. 1903 ; ( 2) Norman Percival DOB aprox. 1905 ; (3) Lillian May DOB aprox. 1906 ; ( 4) Thelma Amy DOB aprox. 1907 ; (5) Then the twins Iris & Myrtle DOB 31/01/1910 born in Mt Garnet as mentioned above. We would like to find out where they lived in Mt Garnet , where they were born ( any hospital records ) , where they went to school ( any school records and photos etc.) Percy Whereat came from Tenterfield to the area with his 2 brothers Ernest John Whereat and Isaac Sidney ( Sid ) Whereat . We think they may have worked in the tin mines when they first got there and saved enough money to buy or open a number of general stores on the tablelands. We know Percy had his first store at Ord Siding as mentioned above between 1906 and 1912 and then moved and bought a store at Edmonton. Sid had 2 stores at Milla Milla and Malanda. He sold the Malanda store in 1924 but kept the Milla Milla store. Ernest had a store at Chillagoe, we know he was there at least in 1908. We have information they may have traded as “Whereat Brothers “
